Another story of a company that deals with sensitive information closing and throwing all of your personal records in the trash versus destroying them in the proper manner. This lattest story is dated 2/22/08 from Cleveland, OH.

A local mortgage company was closing their offices and instead of proper shredding they dump personal information in a local dumpster. The records included banks statements, social security numbers, and with a mortgage company even tax returns and credit reports.

When dealing with any company make sure that they have a proper way to destroy your personal information in compliance with federal law.

Many of the shredders sold in office supply stores and other discount locations have plastic gears that will easily break over time. You need a quality unit with an all metal gear box and cutting heads. In this survey 92 percent of the respondents said that they took additional precautionary steps to prevent identity theft. 21 percent stated that they took no additional steps. Some respondents left comments including that the extra steps taken were to shred bills and banks statements.
